Abstract

Deborah Bowness has been teasing the eye since 1999, when she first made trompe l'oeil wallpaper while studying at the Royal College of Art in London. Now based in St. Leonards-on-Sea, England, she photographs her own vintage furniture and clothing, makes montages of the images and prints them on paper. Pasted on walls, the objects, like ideal houseguests, fill a room with character but take up no more than a few millimeters of space. With her latest collection, Ms. Bowness, 37, has branched out. Until recently, she photographed chairs with their backs to the wall. But now, her Utility Chairs series is showing profiles as well, right ($288 for a 22-inch-by-10.8-foot panel). ''I had a month of complete freedom without any business obligations, and that's when everything loosened up a bit and I actually turned the chair sideways,'' she said. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
