Abstract

This paper attempts to show that internally headed relative clauses in Korean can be best characterized by their semantic and pragmatic properties, especially via lexically inherent properties of spatial and temporal variables posited for the predicates of the relative clause and the main clause. The proposal in this paper will recapture Kuroda''s (Kuroda, S.Y. 1976. Headed relative clauses in modern Japanese and the relevancy condition. In: Proceedings of the Second Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linquistics Society II, UC, Berkeley, pp. 269–279) notion of relevancy in a more concrete way by making use of Kratzer''s (Kratzer, A., 1995. Stage level and individual level predicates. In: Carlson, G.N., and Pelletier, F.J. (Eds.), The Genetic Book. The University of Chicago Press, Chicago) temporal and spatial binding. The distinction between individual and stage level predicates plays an important role in the analysis of this construction. It has also been shown that various aspectual properties of verbs as well as the types of thematic roles restrict the acceptable interpretations of the clauses involved. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
