Abstract

A speech from Martha L. Henderson, President of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, given on October 1, 2011, at the annual meeting of the association, is presented. Focus is given to the way in which the early Christian Church informed the human relationship with the environment. More specifically, Henderson explains how the Church promoted a human identity wholly separate from that of nature. It is argued that secularism could lead to a pro-environmental human identity.
