Abstract

An interview with Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell, chairman of the German family-owned Faber-Castell that gained fame from making pencils, is presented. Faber-Castell credits the company's longevity to its product development, its visionary approach to business, and a rejection of nepotism. It describes how the company was forced to evolve several times, an example of which is when the invention of the calculator in the early 70s removed 25% of its revenue from its slide rule sales.
