Abstract

The article discusses Chinese architect Ieoh Ming (I.M.) Pei, who won the 1983 Pritzker Prize. The author suggests that Pei is the first non-Western architect to be a global architect and traces Pei's childhood move from China to the U.S. The author focuses on buildings including the renovation of the 1980s Cour Napoléon at the Louvre museum in France, the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the 1982 Fragrant Hills Hotel in China.
