Abstract

The deep moral vacuum engulfing capitalist society in 20th century England triggered many authors to determinedly and courageously confront it. One of these authors was D. H. Lawrence, who used explicit phallic language in his works to highlight an overall atmosphere of moral lethargy and sexual hypocrisy. In Lady Chatterley's Lover, explicit language forms the base of the relationship between Connie Reid, a member of aristocracy, and a gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. Lawrence's works were not the first to be subject to censorship or even lawsuits over alleged obscenity. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the ways in which this author uses explicit language as reaction and response to key social issues of his time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
