Abstract

To determine the skeleton age applying the method of Mann, based in the percentage comparison of the obliteration length with respect to palatine suture length in order to obtain the estimated age. Material and method: This study included a sample of 54 skulls that were received in the Criminalistic Laboratory - Department of Forensic Medicine - Forensic Anthropology Area of the National Police of Peru from October 2003 to July 2004. Results: The ages of the 9% were for a range of 20 to 25 years, whose only incisive suture was obliterated. 46% were of ages ranging from 26 to 32 years, who, in addition to the obliteration of the incisive suture obliteration, presented the transverse palatal suture. 11% were in ages ranging from 33 to 39 years, showing obliteration of the transverse palatal suture and posterior median palatine suture. 34% of the ages were observed in a range of 40 to 46 years, showing obliteration of the incisive transverse palatal suture, of the posterior median palatine and anterior median palatine suture. Conclusions: The study had an effectiveness of 94% according to the sequence of palatal suture obliteration, and only 6% did not comply with the sequence of obliteration of one of the palatal sutures; however we must remember that Mann mentioned that the sequence of obliteration follows a pattern of regular conduct.
