Abstract

The article presents a study that evaluates the effects of contraception and/or the physical environment on captive great apes (Hominidae). It shows that all four great ape species exhibited reproductive abnormalities as well as fetal and/or postnatal loss. It also indicates that wild caught gorillas are prone to environmental stress because exhibit a greater incidence of stereotypic behaviors than their captive born counterparts
