Abstract
- The author discusses defining the middle class in the United States. He notes that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a legal definition for poor, yet no such definition is used for the middle class. In addition, he looks at how the economic status of the middle class has become a political topic in the 2012 U.S. presidential election between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The economic policies of Obama and Romney are also discussed.
