Abstract

The global electrical energy consumption is arising and there is a steady increase of the demand on the power capacity, efficient production, distribution and utilization of energy. The traditional power systems are changing globally, a large number of dispersed generation units, including both renewable and non-renewable energy sources such as wind turbines are integrated into systems at the distribution level. Building up wind turbines supposes a significant investment in the foundation construction, especially in case of difficult foundation ground conditions. These ground conditions are found in sites of Dobrogea area from Romania. In this case, there are necessary special foundations to ensure the proper workability of the foundations. In this paper are compared two foundation solutions. One of them supposes to apply a soil improvement technology by realizing compacted granular columns. The second solution consists in carrying out a limited number of piles under the foundation block. The conclusion resulted by comparing these two solutions is that the pile foundation solution is less time consuming and cheaper than the solution consisting in soil improvement with compacted granular columns.
