Abstract

This article explores the "make-up prayer" as it is referred to in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, the two cardinal sources of İslâm, laying down the varying perspectives of scholars of Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir), the Prophetic tradition (hadith), and jurists. It has been noted that there is a consensus among scholars that make-up is necessary for the prayers that have been omitted because of sleep or forgetfulness. With the exception of Dawud al-Zahiri, Ibn Hazm, and Ibn Taymiyya, there is also consensus on the necessity of make-up for intentionally omitted prayers. This paper emphasizes the fact that those who argue in favor of no make-up for intentionally omitted prayers actually recognizes the make-up prayer as viable when they instead advise a more difficult option with plenty of voluntary prayers and good work.
