Abstract

An essay is presented which examines the techniques used in aerial reconnaissance photography during World War I. The author discusses how these techniques and methods, originally designed for wartime use, were incorporated into commercial contexts and avant-garde artistic interpretations. He argues that aerial reconnaissance created a new kind of observer and suggests it impacted the observer intended for cubism and modernist art.
