Abstract

Eleanor Roosevelt has been enshrined as a noble victim with gumption. Now, on the centennial of her birth, we meet a woman who was both admirable and happy in ways we never knew. Now that her papers have become available, we find another Eleanor Roosevelt, separate and independent, daring and romantic, behind the facade of the popular image with which we had been presented. We find a woman whose primary support network was made up of feminist friendships.
