Abstract
- The article presents a survey of literature on the beneficial and detrimental effects of dexamethasone for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in women undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. The utilization of prophylactic dexamethasone significantly lowered the incidence of postoperative nausea, vomiting, the need for rescue antiemetics, and time to meet discharge criteria. The estimated number needed to treat to prevent nausea was eight while for vomiting, it was five.
