Abstract

The article discusses the relation between resource depletion and global population growth. It is said that renewable resources should be used to replace nonrenewable resources on which civilization depends. Other topics include economic costs and environmental degradation caused by deeper mining for increasingly scare materials, the nonrenewable nature of aquifers, and the long-term leasing of land by governments and private investors. Also addressed are the production of biofuels, the exploitation of natural resources in Africa by foreign investors, and the relation of capitalism to environmental issues.
