Abstract
- Osseointegration of an orthopedic implant involves a cascade of cellular and extracellular biological events that take place at bone/implant interface. The process can be enhanced by coating implants with materials of various compositions, chemistry, topographies. The aim of this article was to review the literatures on development and application of numerous plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings (including hydroxyapatite, wollastonite, dicalcium silicate, titanium oxide, and zirconia coatings) for establishing and maintaining the osseointegration based on some major biological requirements, such as good cytocompatibility, advantageous cell response, superior tissue response, effective anti-infection activities.
