Abstract

In this article, the influences of temperature and atmosphere on thermal stability of BaCrO were investigated. BaCrO powders with an orthorhombic structure were synthesized by a facile aqueous solution route. The synthesized BaCrO products were then heat treated at different atmospheres to evaluate their thermal stability by differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry (DTA-TG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. BaCrO has a good thermal stability and does not decompose in air up to 1,400 °C. However, the decomposition of BaCrO in vacuum depends mainly upon a two-stage chemical reaction. BaCrO is finally decomposed into BaCrO with trivalent Cr cations and Ba(Cr Cr)O with both pentavalent Cr and hexavalent Cr cations after heat treatments in vacuum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
