Abstract

The article looks at the implications of Afghan President Hamid Karzai's visit to Washington for the role of the U.S. in resolving key issues in Afghanistan. These key issues include the number of U.S. troops needed to remain in Afghanistan after 2014, peace negotiations with the Taliban movement and Karzai's transfer of power to his successor. The weaknesses of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and failure of the Afgan government to address corruption and improve public services are tackled.
