Abstract

The article studies the microstructure of Scots pine and lodgepole pine both found in Latvian forests. Results reveal that there is good separation of the cell dimensions for both types of trees. They also show that the greater the distance of cell dimensions from the wood pith, the wider the tracheids. The study also proves that Scots pine is superior to lodgepole pine in terms of the geometrical size of the tracheid, but lodgepole pine has been found to be more suitable for Latvian climate.
