Abstract

In Austria, tertiary education is offered through 21 national universities, 19 universities of applied sciences, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria), the Danube University Krems and 13 private universities. Their libraries and the Austrian National Library supply them with literature and information systems for science, education and research. On the national level, these libraries act jointly in the cooperations Austrian Library Network and the Austrian Academic Consortia. On an international level, these libraries cooperate with the Electronic Journals Library (EZB), the Database Information System (DBIS), subito, eBooks on Demand (EOD), the Austrian Library Statistics (ÖBS) and the Library Index BIX. The best possible supply of literature and information systems will be a big challenge for libraries in tertiary education institutions for the future. Currently, an appropriate master plan is lacking for the Austrian libraries. An initiative similar to Germany's priority initiative „Digital Information“ is needed to cover and to push ahead the subjects of national licences, Open Access, national hosting strategy, research data, virtual research environments and legal frameworks in Austria.
