Abstract

The author comments on the rate of spending of low and middle-income countries (LAMICs) on mental health. A description of the treatment gap in people with mental disorders in LAMICs is provided. The author attributes the burden of mental disorders in low-income countries to the failures of human development targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The author explains the importance of a public health approach to mental health care.
