Abstract

The author reassesses an article on the subject of Algerian independence he wrote in the journal in 1992. According to the author, he attempted to write about what 30 years of Algerian independence meant for Algerians, how independence related to Algeria's colonial past, and how Algerians were looking to the future. The author states that he attempted to capture polarization in Algeria that stemmed from the war of liberation in the mid-20th century, demographic discord, and unemployment during the late 20th century. According to the author, he also wrote about then-Algerian president Chadli Bendjedid, and the groups known as the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) and the National Liberation Front (NLF). The author states that the tone of his original article was pessimistic.
