Abstract

The present paper describes the plans and programs proposed by Secretaria de Educación Pública to increase Mexican Elementary-school students' academic performance. The deficiencies are exposed within the results from ENLACE test applied to different subjects and grades. A review of the curricular status is proposed in order to determine failures and put forward substantial changes based on the comparison of traditional Education and the competency-centered Education. To promote the transition to competency-centered Education, the proposal is to select the minimum competitions to achieve by the students and to plan and implement the didactic strategies in order to promote the active participation of the students to achieve the interaction with the object of knowledge with the contextualization of the object of knowledge, the performance of several activities, the verbalization of procedures and the acquired knowledge, the feedback and evaluation of the development.
