The Comparison of Indices and Number of Platelet in Normal and Preeclamptic Pregnant Women.

Introduction: Preeclampsia is one of the complications of pregnancy period that threatens the life of both mother and fetus. Various studies have shown that platelets play a major role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The aim of this study is to compare platelet indices in preeclamptic and normal pregnant women and to evaluate whether these parameters have a predictive significance in determining the severity of preeclampsia or not. Methods: This case-control study was held on pregnant women who referred to Imam Reza Hospital of Kermanshah city for delivery from 2008 to 2010. Participants were classified into three groups of mild preeclamptic (57 person), severe preeclamptic (50 persons), and normal pregnant women (102). Under standard conditions, 5 ml of individual's venous blood of each group was taken prenatally. Automated blood cell counter XT-1800 was used to measure platelet indices that include platelet number, mean platelet volume (MPV), Platelet distribution width (PDW), and Platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR). Data analysis was performed by using ANOVA, SPSS statistical software version 16. Tukey test was used to assess differences between groups. P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in platelet number and indices between preeclampsia and healthy pregnant women. As a result, no significant difference of platelet number and indices was observed in patients with preeclampsia. Conclusion: The results showed that platelet indices were not affected by preeclampsia during pregnancy. Also, no difference was observed in the term of platelet number and indices in mild and severe preeclamptic cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
