Abstract

The article looks at the debate over the causes for the decline of humanities studies within U.S. higher education following the release of a June 2013 report by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences indicating a lack of attention to the humanities. It cites studies indicating that the decline in humanities studies among undergraduates was at its peak in the 1980s. Details are provided on criticism stating there is a no audience for humanities research due to a lack of interest from students and school leaders. In response, the author notes that many humanities professors have cited a lack of institutional prestige among such college departments.
