Abstract

The article discusses fears regarding the impact of automation on the U.S. labor market during the 1960s. Topics include the relation between technology and unemployment, the views of U.S. intellectuals regarding the effects of automation, and the relation between automation and manufacturing productivity. Also addressed are the social effects of layoffs due to technological innovations, the book "The Coming of Post-Industrial Society," by Daniel Bell, and political aspects of the distribution of wealth in society.
