Abstract

The article reflects on the value of tenure for college teachers and researchers in light of the increased use of technology in higher education for online learning. Topics include former Princeton University president William G. Bowen's perspective on online learning, tenure as a symbol of professional status, as well as the relation between tenure and academic freedom. Also mentioned are comments by former University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins.
