Abstract

The essay considers the difference between imagined freedom and that found and created by fugitive slaves from the Southern States in Mexico between 1833 and 1857. It reports that slaves found themselves in an established racial system of social order in Mexico which was enforced on both a federal and local level. Other topics include foreign relations between the U.S. and Mexico, the Mexican-American War, and the legal status of fugitive slaves and free Blacks in Mexico.
