Abstract

The article discusses a study which showed that sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) activate many genes in the one-carbon cycle to provide S-adeosylmethionine (SAMe), the major cellular methyl donor and key cofactor for the synthesis of the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. It suggests the cooperation between SREBP-2 and its intronic miRNA miR-33a indicating an important function of miR-33 in inhibiting proteins counteracting SREBP-dependent activities.
