Abstract: The article discusses the work of entomologist Sue Cobey. She is trying to strengthen the viability of the North American honeybee stock by artificially inseminating queen bees. Cobey gets the sperm from carefully chosen drone bees from a European gene pool. Additional information is presented about the diminishing diversity among breeding queen bees in the U.S.
