Abstract

The article discusses the tendency of individual investors to achieve returns below those of the mutual funds they invest in. Due to untimely buying and selling, investors in the Pimco Total Return bond fund were collectively $11 billion poorer for the year ended September 30, 2013 than they would have been had they simply bought and held the fund for the entire year. Moreover, research by finance professors Geoff Friesen and Travis Kapp shows investment advisers err similarly.
