Abstract: The author discusses the defeat of the Republican politician Ken Cuccinelli by the Democratic politician Terry McAuliffe in a November 2013 U.S. election for the governor of Virginia, arguing that Cuccinelli's reputation, his running mate E. W. Jackson, and public opinion concerning a U.S. government shutdown may have adversely impacted his campaign.
