Abstract

In relation to the debate on social determinants vs. social determination of health, a theoretical discussion is presented regarding the implications of conceiving public health from the standpoint of a social justice that restores the subject. First, the discussion analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health, and presents the criticism from the social determination and collective health movement from the standpoint of the social determination of health approach. Then, it discusses the need to overcome the dichotomist, causalist and deterministic view of public health, which has traditionally excluded the subject. Likewise, and from a dialectic perspective of subject/society and an approach based on the capabilities of justice, the discussion considers the appropriateness of conceiving health as creation, emergence and happening, and also as the deployment of the determinations and potentialities of being. Hence, thinking public health from the standpoint of social justice requires a theoretical and ethical effort, and becomes an opportunity to broaden its understanding and its practice.
