Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the production of gated communities in the city of Macapá - capital of Amapá State - as part of urban restructuring that has been reaching medium cities of Amazon in the beginning of the nineteenth century. It understands that gated communities, with a set of modernizing source objects, such as shopping center, luxury hotels, new cinema halls, vertical buildings, playhouse auditoriums, represent the new content of the region medium cities urbanization. Even if the construction of gated communities in Macapá has been, on the beginning, the only choice that middle class - above all the one associated to public sector - found for access to housing, nowadays these communities assume a new socio-spatial content and are presented as part of the urban restructuring that has been reaching brazilian medium cities.
