Abstract

Introduction. In addition to clinical examination of patients, conventional radiology is the most useful clinical instrument in differential diagnosis of skeletal injuries. Objective: describe a radiological sign which we have named phantom bone sign, and review the different radiological findings encountered in related bone pathology. Material and methods. Describe and state the clinical meaning of the finding and its different varieties, to then relate it to medical practice through observation of representative radiological images. Results. The phantom bone sign consists of bone loss occurring as a result of neoplastic or infectious processes or in- tolerance to external elements implanted in the patient. Conclusion. Conventional radiology remains a very important tool in diagnosing different bone conditions. Understanding the phantom bone sign may help us make better differential diagnoses, always supported by clinical findings [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
