Abstract

Highlights: [•] For long-lived species, we show demographic indicators are more responsive to environmental pressures than those based on abundance. [•] Indicators can be corrected for the prevailing environmental conditions to provide a more accurate representation measure of anthropogenic impact. [•] Seabird breeding failure rates in the North Sea are linked to fisheries pressure, with those species most sensitive to fisheries experiencing the greatest increases in breeding failure.
