Abstract

Highlights: [•] Leaf age and light intensity substantially affect photosynthesis within the canopy of papaya. [•] Mature leaves in the upper canopy were the major contributors to papaya photosynthesis. [•] The first study of LAI and extinction coefficient was estimated in the papaya canopy. [•] Relative gas exchange measurements could be verified between intrinsic and environmental effects. [•] Photosynthesis is highly adaptable in a field net-house cultivation system.
