Abstract

The characteristics of body composition are very useful determinants of health and nutrition status and sensible predictors of obesity. The aim of this study was to analyze body composition differences of students to detect individuals with obesity risk, subjects with an altered tissue electric properties using bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and to calculate correlations between anthropometric and bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) parameters. We studied 293 healthy individuals (140 males in age 21.0 ± 2.6 years, 153 females in age 19.5 ± 2.8 years). The whole sample was analysed considering sex and type of school (secondary schools and universities). The results of vector analysis showed significantly different tissue electric properties in male and female students, confirmed by Hotelling T2-test (males: T2 = 35.6, p = 0.0000; females: T2 = 29.7, p = 0.0000). The overall nutrition status of both male and female university students was better than secondary school students. Mean values of BMI, WHR, FMI (fat mass index) and FFMI (fat free mass index) were within the categories of normal values in all studied groups. However, after the distribution of these indices into categories we detected on average 26.16% males and 36.24% females with increased obesity risk. The mean values of BCMI (body cell mass index) in both females groups indicated malnutrition, which was detected in 3.6% of males and 8.5% of females by the method combining BMI and FMI. Direct masked obesity was found among 9.2% of males and 22.89% of females what underlined the importance of examination of body composition mostly in cases if BMI values are optimal. Strong correlation coefficient was found between BMI and FM%, BMI and FMI in both sexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
