Abstract

An essay is presented concerning the role of 18th century Lutheran pastor J.G. Herder in the question of the study of the beginning of history and Near Eastern chronology during the Enlightenment. It discusses Herder's essay "The Oldest Document of the Human Race," the study of chronology, and the significance of the Biblical Old Testament in establishing chronology, particularly the history of the Biblical figure Moses.
