Abstract

High density polyethylene (HDPE) was gained antibacterial property by the reinforcement of nano zinc oxide (ZnO) particles. Prior melt mixing, particles were modified with silane and stearic acid. For characterization of the modified particles, FT-IR analysis was done and then polymer material was loaded with these particles (1%, 3%, 5%) on a twin screw extruder. The granules obtained from the extruder were plastic injection molded and mechanical test specimens were obtained. After the mechanical tests, impact strength and elastic modulus of the composited were obtained, the morphologies of the composites were observed by electrone scanning microscope. In order to investigate antibacterial property of the composites, a standard method, JIS Z 2801 was applied. In the result, stearic acid was more successful in improving both antibacterial and mechanical properties. Also, it has been seen that the reduction of particle content in the polymer was effective in improving antibacterial efficiency of the composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
