Abstract

The article discusses what is termed the gas mask aesthetic in Japanese modern art during the 20th century. It references the photograph "Gas Mask Parade, Tokyo" and other images by photographer Horino Masao, discusses the gas mask as a symbol of anonymous Japanese citizens and weapons technology, and examines the Japanese civil air defense policy of the 1930s.
