In this article the author focuses on the role of political economy variables in the evolution of federal states and its impact on the contours and working of political parties, the main organization of interest aggregation and articulation in contemporary democracies. It further discusses federal systems in Australia and Canada, impact of party systems on the working of federal states and evolution of the Australian and Canadian welfare states.
