Abstract

The North Anatolian Fault is probably the most important fault line in Turkey. Our subject Erbaa, which is a district of the Tokat province, is located on that fault line. In this study, effects of the earthquakes in Erbaa on December 20th, 1942, and November 27th, 1943 were examined. Especially the 1942 earthquake was considerably effective and caused serious loss of life and property. It also greatly affected the other two towns of the province, Niksar and Almus. The loss of life in the 1943 earthquake was not less than the earlier one. The both earthquakes occurred in the winter season and this caused difficult conditions for citizens. After the earthquakes, the government tried to help people and relief the very harmful effects in the area. In this respect, aid and solidarity of civil people were important as well. It could be said that the government was successful in relieving troubles of the people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
