Abstract
- Explores writer Samuel Richardson's connections with the Whig opposition within Oxford University in England and his dissatisfaction with dissent against the Hanoverian monarchy. Richardson's correspondence with Benjamin Kennicott, Fellow of Exeter College; Conflict between the characters Clarissa and Lovelace in the novel `Clarissa,' as a commentary on factors associated with the Jacobite threat to social order.
