Abstract

The article focuses on the effort of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) in developing statewide nutrient reduction strategy to reduce nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads in the Mississippi River. Topics discussed include excess of N and P in surface waters posing concern of toxicity to aquatic organisms locally and best management practices (BMP) such as reducing N rate in fertilizers, installing controlled drainage and restoring wetlands.
