Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined by the International Continence Society (ICS) as a condition resulting in the involuntary loss of urine, which generates a social or hygienic problem. This dysfunction, responsible for physical damage, psychological and social affects 20% to 50% of the female population throughout their lives. International Continence Society Physiotherapy indicated as first-line treatment for UI, due to its high efficiency, low cost and risk. Based on this, the present study aims to verify the benefits of physical therapy in elderly women who have stress incontinence. To check the publications related to the physiotherapy approach in stress urinary incontinence in elderly women, surveys were conducted in May 2013 in the electronic databases Bireme, Lilacs and SciELO. As search strategies used the following descriptors:'' urinary incontinence'','' physiotherapy'' and'' older''. The physical therapy is effective in elderly women who have SUI. Patients subjected to various physical therapy procedures showed improvement in symptoms of stress urinary incontinence and quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
