Abstract
- Canine distemper virus (CDV) is an enveloped negative-strand RNA virus classified under the genus Morbillivirus within the family of Paramxyoviridae. The aim of the study is to classify the microscopic changes in the central nervous system (CNS) from dogs with previous diagnosis of CDV by histopatology and immunohistochemistry (IHC). A total of 90 dogs were necropsied at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory UFMT between February 2012 and January 2013. During one year, 80% (64/80) of the dogs necropsied had microscopic lesions in CNS suggestive of CDV of which 73.4% (47/64) were confirmed by IHC. Microscopically, the CNS lesions were classified in acute 17.2% (8/47), in subacute 72.4% (34/47) and chronic 10.6% (5/46) of the cases. The CDV should be considered an important viral agent in dogs showing neurological clinical signs in Cuiabá and immunohistochemistry test is a useful tool in the post-mortem diagnosis.
