Abstract

The article discusses comments made on June 5, 2014 by U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Mary Jo White about increased regulation of high-frequency traders (HFTs). White said HFTs should be required to register as broker-dealers, and that the SEC was looking into how it might ban short-term strategies pursued by HFTs that can create undue market volatility. She also called for greater disclosure by trading venues known as dark pools.
