Abstract

It has been traditionally assumed that the negation expressed by the Spanish negative prefix des- is a stronger, more marked negation than the standard propositional negation conveyed by the adverb no. The aim of this paper is to connect the subjective values associated to des- with a general trend consisting in turning contradictories into contraries due to a pragmatic principle of reinforcement. Specifically, this article focuses on verbal derivation, i. e., on those cases in which des- is adhered to verbal bases to conformnew verbs. As a consequence of this pragmatic reinforcement, it will be shown that incorporated negation exhibited by des- increases the subjective presence of the speaker, which can be considered as an example of subjectification.
