Abstract

On 1 July 2012 the Australian Government's comprehensive carbon tax was levied on those businesses that produce more than 25 Mt annually of greenhouse gas emissions. The evidence justifying the need for such a tax is examined using the geological record, contemporary measurements and their interpretation. The hypothesis that carbon dioxide generated by mankind can cause dangerous global warming lacks compelling evidence. Moreover, the historical evidence demonstrates that reducing CO2 emissions as a precautionary measure will have very little, if any, influence on the timing, direction or extent of climate change.
